Dear Dr. Bland,
Thank you for the opportunity to
contribute my experiences to your website. Feel free
to use any part of this letter that you feel appropriate.
I contacted your office nearly
two years ago because I was fairly new to Wilmington and had
a dental emergency (lost a crown). I was very familiar
with your name because my mother was a patient of your
grandfather, and then your father, all of her life.
You are the third generation of Dr. Blands to care for her
and she wouldn't go anywhere else.
Probably due to my past
experiences with numerous dental procedures in the past, I
delay visits to the dentist until something hurts. As
a child, I had numerous extractions, fillings, braces, and
surgical wisdom tooth removal. As an adult, I have
been known to go 5 years without visiting a dentist.
Prior to visiting you, I began a series of 4 appointments in
New Bern for scaling and stopped after 3. It was not
just the discomfort; it was more the anxiety leading up to
and during the procedures.
I went to the appointment scared
to death. The particular crown I lost was on a tooth
which had already had 2 root canals and a root extraction
over the previous 2 years. The procedures were
uncomfortable and the recovery painful. I suspected
that the tooth would have to come out and you confirmed
that. You calmly explained to me what the options were
and allowed me to decide what would be done. You
explained the sedation option and I chose to try it. I
was amazed what a difference it made. I was able to go
to the office without anxiety and go home without memory of
anything unpleasant. Discomfort was well controlled
during the recovery period and I was impressed to receive a
call from your office to check on me later in the day.
The more beneficial part of the
sedation technique, for me, was that it allowed me to have
long overdue dental work without fear. I have gone
through filling replacements and other procedures that have
greatly improved the appearance of my teeth and restored my
gum and teeth health. You carefully chose specialists,
when I had to be referred, who also used sedation for their
procedures and I appreciated that.
Though I had to cancel my last
appointment due to our house fire, I will reschedule and be
back - without being afraid.
Sincerely,
Cathy
